Hampton Roads

The economic and social integration of the Hampton Roads communities led to the designation of the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in 1983. Since that time, the Hampton Roads area has grown to become one of the 30 largest MSAs in the country, with a population nucleus spread among several growing cities of significant size. Therefore, Hampton Roads has come to refer not only to the harbor and its contiguous communities, but also to the entire metropolitan area. Local industry is heavily service-oriented, with growth centered on contractors serving the large government and military presence in the area.
