Cherry Bekaert Adds Sharon Day to Firm’s Government Services Group
In this capacity, Day will offer auditing and accounting services to state and local governments such as school divisions, economic and industrial development authorities, and nonprofit entities. She will also advise localities on matters related to Government Audit Standards (the Yellow Book), OMB Circular A-133, financial reporting and Government Accounting Standards Board (“GASB”) audit requirements.
Possessing over 20 years of public sector experience, Day has worked with local and international firms, and other localities in the auditing process. Prior to Cherry Bekaert, she spent 11 years functioning in multiple leadership roles at the local government level, helping her locality obtain its first “Distinguished Budget Award” from the Government Finance Officers Association (“GFOA”). Day also supervised the annual independent audit and Comprehensive Annual Financial Report preparation, and was an integral part of the leadership team that assisted the locality in achieving its first AAA bond rating.
A licensed Certified Public Accountant in Virginia, Day is a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (“VSCPA”) and Virginia Government Finance Officers Association (“VGFOA”). She is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (“AICPA”) and GFOA.
With extensive ties to Virginia’s Hampton Roads region, Day received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. She later attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, earning a Master of Science in Accounting. Additionally, Day volunteers for the Heritage Humane Society, serves on the board for the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, and is chair for the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex (“WISC”) Gymnastics Parents Association’s annual golf tournament.
