As Cherry Bekaert’s National Leader of State and Local Tax (SALT) Services, and a Tax Partner based in the Firm’s Northern Virginia/Greater Washington practice, Cathie is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 25 years of experience. Cathie serves as a trusted multistate advisor and has worked extensively with publicly traded corporations as well as privately owned companies across a wide variety of industries. Clients appreciate her expertise in addressing the complex SALT issues arising in the flow-through entity environment, which has resulted in significant reductions of risk for her clients. Cathie focuses her practice by delivering high-level technical expertise to resolve complex SALT issues for clients firm-wide. Her extensive SALT experience includes identifying areas of risk and resolving exposure, entity structuring and design, complex transactional planning, dispute resolution, cash recovery services and performance of due diligence engagements. Her experience encompasses income and franchise, sales and use, gross receipts, property, transfer and employment taxes. She also addresses unclaimed property concerns, and assists clients in obtaining state and local inducements.

Cathie enjoys participating in the state legislative process through analyzing proposed tax legislation, evaluating its impact on various industries, and formulating recommendations. She is experienced in providing testimony before state legislative bodies. In order to proactively identify opportunities and secure savings for Cherry Bekaert clients, Cathie continually analyzes and communicates significant SALT developments throughout the Firm.

Prior to joining Cherry Bekaert, Cathie was the national director of state and local tax services for a Maryland-based Top 20 accounting firm. She previously served as an area director within Ernst & Young’s SALT practice where she was a SALT services coordinator for multiple large publicly traded corporations. Early in her career Cathie also gained seven years of industry experience with a middle-market manufacturing company.
