The Virtual Conference kicks off with an introduction and overview by the Cherry Bekaert team of the tax credits landscape, topics and session speakers. During this session, you will hear important insights from the IRS on exams and critical focus areas for those claiming federal tax credit benefits. The session will then pivot to hear from an R&D Litigator, who will share his thoughts and recommendations to avoid exposures, potential red flags, and any concerns on recent IRS pronouncements.

Cheryl is the Director Field Operations Engineering in the Eastern Compliance Practice Area in the Large Business and International (LB&I) Division with Internal Revenue Service. Cheryl provides executive leadership to a national program with employees who serve as subject matter experts in the area of engineering, with several disciplines, real estate appraisals and valuation. The program provides technical expertise to support IRS compliance strategies.

Prior to this assignment, Cheryl served as the Director, Field Operations (Southeast) in the Eastern Compliance Practice Area in the Large Business and International (LB&I) Division In this position, she provided executive leadership to field operations in coordinating complex tax administration services to meet the needs of large and mid-sized businesses and individuals with international activity.

Paul is currently the Director of Exam Southwest in the Small Business (SBSE) Division within the Internal Revenue Service. Paul is responsible for directing the technical and operational aspects for examination activities in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Hawaii. In addition, Paul oversees the compliance activities and provides direct executive oversight (with a national footprint) for examiners who conduct examinations of the R&E credit issue along with preparer and promoter investigations with the SBSE Division.

Prior to this assignment, Paul served in several executive positions in the Large Business and International Division including Deputy Director Pass Through Entities, Director Field Operations Southwest, Director Field Operations Computer Audit Specialists, and Director Field Operations West – Field Specialists.

Alex is a partner in the Washington, DC office of the global law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. Alex represents businesses in resolving disputes with the Internal Revenue Service concerning the research credit, transfer pricing, and other complex tax issues. The research credit is a focus of Alex’s tax controversy practice. He is the author of the treatise Legal Guide to the Research Credit published by Thomson Reuters and co-chair of Morgan Lewis’ annual R&D Tax Credit Symposium held every November. Alex has helped many taxpayers from a variety of industries prepare and defend research credit positions and resolve research credit disputes in audit, Appeals, and litigation.

CPE for Virtual Events

  • Please join sessions on time, or 5 minutes early if possible. Joining a session late may cause you to lose the ability to obtain CPE based on the following NASBA regulations:
    • There will be 4 polling questions per hour of each session.
    • In order to receive CPE credit for virtual events, you must attend at a minimum, 50 minutes of every hour and respond to at least 3 of the 4 polling questions per hour.
    • Polling questions will not be announced in advance.
    • If you view the conference in a group setting, you will still need to log into CPE sessions through your laptop to track your attendance and respond to polling questions.
    • We cannot guarantee polling questions will appear on your mobile device and recommend that you use your laptop for your webinar session. We will not be able to award you CPE credit if you do no answer the required number of polling questions and/or are not in session for the required length of time. This includes issues due to mobile technological difficulties or any other difficulty that is unique to your webinar connection.
    • Please be sure that you join the session for which you registered using the link that was provided to you. We will not be able to award you CPE if you join a session using a link that was provided to someone else.
    • You will receive one certificate for each course you attend/pass.
