States Provide Guidance on Extensions Available for Taxpayers

April 2, 2020

States have been working diligently to make decisions and publish information pertaining to state income tax filing and payment deadlines.

Many states do not automatically follow the federal extension. Every state that imposes a personal income tax has now provided some guidance, except for New Jersey where legislation is pending. A current chart of state income tax due dates for various taxpayers can be found on our website. First quarter estimated tax payment extensions are also provided for individual taxpayers.

Please note that many states are also allowing additional time for filing and/or payment of other state taxes, such as sales/use and property tax. We have prepared a chart of sales/use tax filing extensions that are available here. State websites can be consulted for additional information, or reach out to your Cherry Bekaert tax professional.

Please note that this is evolving news. There will no doubt be more developments, and we will keep you updated as they are released.

Cherry Bekaert remains committed to providing you a superior client experience. We continue to work hard and creatively to meet your tax return needs and encourage you to submit your tax information to us as early as you can. Filing now allows you to accelerate current year refunds, if applicable, and at a minimum provides you important cash flow planning information. Furthermore, the recently enacted CARES legislation permits many opportunities to carryback 2019 losses for additional refunds.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your tax professional team members.
